One of the first 45 rpm records I ever bought was Jan & Dean's "Baby Talk." Like the "kid" singing in the song, I was only about 5 years old too! I was hooked, and have been a fan since then. Years later, I had the honor not only to meet J&D, but to perform in their band as well. I convinced them to put "Baby Talk" back into their set and got the biggest kick out of actually being able to perform it with them. I loved Jan and will miss his kind spirit, humor, and gentle ways. By the way, I still have that copy of "Baby Talk" in my record collection and I will cherish it more than ever.

I had the joy of seeing Jan & Dean in 1996at the beginning of a teacher exchange year in St. Louis. They did a free concert in Union Station. It was a superb performance. The nicest thing was that Jan sang lead on most of the J& D originals and performed superbly. I am sorry I could not wait around to meet him at the end. It's also a shame they never got to perform in England. Still his wonderful music will live on. My condolences to his family and friends.

I had the priviledge of seeing Jan and Dean two years ago. The concert was wonderful and Jan was an inspiration to see. Jan and Dean's music has that special quality to it that very few people can create....It just makes you feel good to listen to it...and I believe that's the greatest thing music can do, and probably what Jan would love to hear.

Listen....listen....can you hear it on the wind....'little surfer, little one, makes my heart come all undone....'......Jan, Carl, and Dennis make beautiful music together don't they....

I was shocked when I heard about Jan's passing. Someone at my job told me about it and I had to go online just to find out for sure that it was true. I grew up in the 60's listening to Jan and Dean, The Beach Boys, The Righteous Brothers, and I have followed their music ever since. I have several of Jan and Dean's vinyl LP albums and the movie of "Dead Man's Curve". Jan will be greatly missed. My prayers and thoughts go out to his family and to Dean.

A cell phone call from my friend Carl brought me the news of Jan's passing. It was a tearful day from that point. Ironically, about a week earlier I had just spent some time with Dean down in Southern California. We spoke of many things including Jan and his current health. After all these years, you expected Jan to go on forever, but you knew in your heart, it could not happen. I was lucky enough to see J&D many times at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. And so, (Here They Come) From All Over the World...to thank you Jan for all the great fun, music and memories!

I have an autographed T-shirt that I will always cherish. You could actually understand the words to their music and there was no profanity like there is today for my grandsons to listen to. It was tragic when Jan had his car accident but like they say, "You came a long way, baby!" You will always be remembered by us baby boomers. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family and Dean. One thing for sure Jan & Dean as a duo will live in our hearts forever. RIP!

Jan and I sat next to eachother in the Make-up room,in Austin, Texas, when we taped "At The Drive In" for PBS, Jan's last TV appearance. There was a curtain seperating our chairs, but we could see eachother. Jan looked at me,said, "Hey, The Rip Chords", and sang the intro to "3 Window Coupe" to me. Then he said you look good. And I said back to him,"No Jan, you look good, as always." Jan smiled. You see, to us, Jan was the ultimate surfin' rock star, and the coolest looking one of them all. I'm so glad I had that moment with Jan.

I first heard Jan & Dean at Lillian's Ice Cream stand in Providence, RI, in the early 60s when I was 9. The high school kids who worked there played "Surf City" all summer long. Everytime we went there for frozen lemonade, "Surf City" was playing on the radio or the jukebox. "Two girls for every boy." Wow! I knew then that Jan & Dean were something special. Been a fan ever ever since. I am saddened that Jan is now gone. Thanks for the great memories, Jan.

Jan & Dean made it theirs with their unique singing style. Jan will be missed by me & a lot of people who grew up listening, dancing & singing to his music. My condolences to his family & friends.

I was on vacation last week when I learned of Jan's passing, and I ended my week of vacation with a deep sadness that I am still feeling to this day. Jan was a good friend, and I had spent hours and hours with him prior to different concerts in helping him over the years, so I got to know him pretty well. We would practice singing his songs together. And just talking about the days from before the accident and after. Jan always enjoyed talking about the past when I was with him, and he enjoyed learning about what others had said about him, such as Roger Christian and Brian Wilson.

The last time I was with Jan sometime last year, Jan told me how much he enjoyed my cover designs on the dvds and cds I did, and he asked me if I would be interested in doing cd cover designs for a new cd he wanted to put out titled "Jan Berry Anthology". I of coarse was honored he asked me to do it, and told him to just let me know when he was ready to get started. He called me a few times after that, and said he was still putting it together and wanted to know if I would "be ready to do it". Now, it is hard to say if it will still happen, but I would be glad to donate any time in doing anything I could to help, as I agreed to all along.

I feel very lucky to have known Jan (and Dean) over the years, and to work with them as I have in the past few years, and to just share memories with Jan prior to shows. Helping Jan at the autograph table was always a blast as well. Jan had MANY fans, fans who would wait hours after a concert just to say "hi" and get his picture and autograph.

Gertie told me and it comes as no surprise, that Jan LIVED for performing after his 1966 accident, and that performing on stage was like therapy for Jan. In my own conversations with Jan, I know that he loved being with his fans. He really appreciated them, probably more so then most other performers from his era.

I will miss Jan, very much. And I do hope that he gets remembered in the industry for what he was, a very talented musical producer that had great influence on others around him. Whether the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame put Jan and Dean in or not, they will always be Hall of Fame in my book.

Rest in peace Jan.

At a time when a mans emotions is looked upon as a weakness in this world, I literally shed quite a few tears when I heard of the passing of Jan Berry. When I was a boy back in the 1970's, my very first record album was Jan & Dean's "Gotta Take That One Last Ride". It was the first time I ever heard the music. It literally grabbed me by the collar and sucked me in. I listened to each voice and each harmony. I read the liner notes and saw Jan's name all over the album. I knew he was something special. When my friends were listening to AC/DC, I was picking out every vocal harmony to Little Old Lady. My very first concert was J&D's first tour at Old Chicago Amusement Park in Bolingbrook IL (It no longer exists). I think I still have the ticket stub. I always remembered Jan's coming back after the accident when I was growning up, whenever I had trouble in my life. It gave me inspiration to try harder. Godspeed Jan. I'm sure Dennis and Carl are waiting at the gates to take you to an impromptu jam with Lennon and Harrison. Peace!

167. Robin Jones wrote at 30.03.2004 - 18:36 hours

It was with intense sadness that my friends and I heard the news.
Jan & Dean are one of the great early rock pioneers and did so much to shape a distinctive sound and style. Their influence and following was far wider that I think they ever appreciated, and although chart hits here in the UK were few, the name of the band has always been a household word.
Sadly, although I collected every track available, geographical and home circumstances led to me seeing only one show live, near LA in November 1988, a fact I have always bitterly regretted. I filmed the concert for posterity. My companion and I genuinely believed that the sound on stage easily equalled that of the Beach Boys.
Jan was not only a musical legend in his own right but a born survivor and an inspiration to many in his fight to regain his health. Although the hits had long since dried up by the eighties, his stage performances were often exemplary.
There are many current surf and garage bands in the London area of the UK who regularly quote Jan & Dean as their prime influence.
The fact that a duo whose success was largely centred on America can have so much influence on today's thinking youngsters underlines their impact more than 40 years on.
Jan will live on through his music - you'd better believe it!

THERE WILL NEVER BEEN ANOTHER JAN BERRY OR ANOTHER JAN AND DEAN! GOD, I MISS THAT WONDERFUL, FUN, FEEL-GOOD MUSIC....WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO TODAY'S MUSIC?

GOD SPEED JAN BERRY.

Brian's beautiful Lay Down Burden never seemed so appropriate as now. We saw Jan and Dean last year at the Oakdale Theater for the first time. I am so glad we got to see them perform after loving the music all these years. What courage he had to go on! Thank you for the sweet memories. Rest in peace, Jan.

Jan, you will never be forgetten. In fact, with your passing, I hope that a new legion of fans will be made aware of the wonderful music you made that will live forever. My thoughts and prayers go out to your family, your friends, and your partner Dean. I urge all of Jan's fans to read REMEMBER ME WHEN I'M GONE. It's on Jan's web site. It is a eulogy he wrote to himself last year. It will both lift and break your heart. Rest in peace. Bobby

I am very sad to hear of the passing of Jan Berry. I was always a fan of the music of Jan & Dean and had the pleasure of seeing them in concert twice once in 1964 and in 1998 in Chattanooga TN. Both were great shows, the concert in 1998 was very moving. Jan signed autographs for over 1 hour after them show and you could really tell that he enjoyed it. Thank you Jan for all the great sounds.

My friend Tom Clark emailed me with the bad news on 3/28. I hadn't heard anything at all. Jan's story is one of perseverance thru sheer determination. It must have been frustrating to hear all those musical tunes in his head and having to transcribe it at a slower pace. I was a kid when Jan had the accident. I didn't really get into J&D music until early '70s with the anthology album, then with PDRR and their surf revival music. I don't know if Jan was a Christian or not, but he must have had some faith to endure like he did. My condolences to his family and to Dean.

I am sorry I hit theee wrong button and was not finished.

I have to say the one thing that has saddened mee is the idea Jan Berry will not be able to be there in person when the Rock & roll Hall Of Famee finally get off their asses and realize Jan Berry deserved to be in there and they are depriving the rest of the inductees the porivelidge of having Jan Berry in their with them. In my lifetime I cannot name one producer better then Jan Berry himself. His music was sound, clean and this is something he was doing perfectly all the while others, namely Phil Spector was getting recognition as being the genuis of producing. I dare all to listen to the two men's work. There is no second guessing, Jan Berry was the genuis producer of OUR lifetime. That doesn't even include Jan Berry teaching Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys how to produce music. That is how important a man Jan Berry was. His drive to be the best it was drove him to put out the best produced music of our lifetime, in my mind anyways.

Finally I would like to thank Jan Berry for all he did for me. He showed me a new appriciation for music and the importance of a clean sound. I will miss you Jan Berry and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for all you did for music. I also would like to send my condolences to the Berry family as well as the Torrence family. Jan Berry you will be missed!

I found out the news on Saturday while at work, looking through my email. I just stared at my computer screen for seemed to be an hour. I finally gathered myself and was able to slowly put together my thoughts and feelings on what Jan Berry has done for me, as part of Jan & Dean. I heard Jan & Dean for the first time when I was 7 years old and I have to thank my aunt for letting me hear them. The song was Surf City and I loved it. I listened to the whole 8 track tape of them over and over all day long.

Several years passed and I remembered seeing their movie Dead Man's Curve on television when it first came out. I went out and bought as many tapes of them as I could, but my hunger wasn't not satisfied at just that. I proceeded from that point on to collect their original recordings. My friends all laughed at mee because off my enjoyment of them. Afterall there aren't alot of 15 year olds (at the time) that would be searching for Jan & Dean's music in 1987. Jan Berry's clean production and sound is what drove me to do this very thing. I would even, alomg with my brothers and a neighborhood friend, record their songs music onto cassette tape, and record ourselves singing the lead and background. It led me to buying a 4 track recorder and pursueing music. I played drums, learned guitar and bass guitar. I used Jan Berry's producing as a template for the sound I would try and create for years to come.

I am now 32 and I owe most of Jan & Dean's original recordings, but also found rare recordings by Jan Berry AFTER his near fatal car accident in 66'. I could not believe my ears when I listened to Jan's material. It was incredible and I always wondered, as I do to this day, why it never receieveed radio airplay. Maybe I am just being biased towards the man who influenced me in music, but I thought several songs should have been. Fun City, Totally Wild, Sing Sang A Song, and most recently Ocean Park Angel, were to me songs that should havee easily been on the radio, as were other songs I thought as well.

We saw Jane and Dean in December of 2002 in Wallingford, CT and felt proud to have been there. When Jan was assisted on stage, I hope he felt the love from his fans...it was surely there! A bit more personal, I purchased the 45rpm of "Linda" on ebay and had it framed with the lyrics to the song and with a 60s photo and the more recent photo from the Fan Club. It was for my wife, Linda, on out first anniversary and hangs in our bedroom. So Jan and Dean are with us always. May eternal rest grant Jan peace. Our gratitude to your music will never end. The legacy will continue. As Brian might say: Peace and Mercy to you.

It was with great sadness that I learned of Jan Berry's death this weekend. Having had the pleasure of knowing him and Dean Torrance before and after the accident....I will personally remember him fondly. I had the pleasure of working with Jan and Dean in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in 1963, then when The Monkees took Jan on the road with them in the summer of 1967, I saw him come off the plane in Shreveport, La. He looked at me, but didn't say anything.....but the look in his eyes said he knew me. When the radio station I was with worked with the guys at the Colorado State Fair, then again at our first anniversary celebration in Pueblo, Colo.....it was a genuine treat. Dean called me from their hotel room in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and said they were setting there after a rain out and wondered if I were free over the Weekend before the fourth of July.....they were going to be in Laughlin, Nevada, and Dean invited me down. All of this is said to let you know, as an oldies disc jockey and old Rock and Roll Musician, when a portion of a duo dies, like this it leaves a great hole in my heart, just as Bobby Hatfield's death did. My very best to Gary Griffin, Dean Torrance and the rest of the Bel Air Bandits......

He and Dean whipped up the crowd and he sang his signature tune with passion and love. He's now with Carl and Dennis Wilson in their Surf City.

I played Surf City for Jan last night at the Hilton. He will always be missed.

Upon hearing about Jan's passing...I wrote a few words about my last experience in seeing Jan back about 8 to 10 years ago, and posted them on the Beach Boys Britain website Message board. Someone thought I should post them here:

Just wanted to share a little something in rememberance of Jan Berry.

Quite a few years back, Alan Boyd had called me and told me he had been invited by Gary Griffin (who was playing in Jan and Dean's band at the time), to come up to Windsor (just north of Santa Rosa--about 40 miles north of San Francisco) to see Jan and Dean.

After we arrived, and obtained our backstage passes to this little tiny theatre (couldn't have held more than 500 people), we went backstage to talk to Gary, and to also see Jan and Dean. I had met Dean a few times before, and after talking a bit with him, Jan came into the dressing room to say "hello".
He was without his shirt, and explained that he had been "out front signing autographs for people in the heat", and had come back to change his shirt before the show. If you know Jan, he would always make himself available to sign autographs before each show. He loved the contact with the fans. And was always so sweet and lovable.

But, poor guy, to see him "shirtless" it appeared obvious that his physical condition looked worse than I had imagined before. After we shared a laugh or two, he went to get a fresh shirt and to get ready for the show.

After he stepped out, I asked Dean about him. "Dean, how does he do it?" Dean replied, "It's his life. It's his "Garden of Eden". It's what keeps him alive. He loves the fans; loves the music, loves the fame." When I asked Dean about his physical condition, Dean replied that Jan still had occasional physical therapy, and was also in a lot of pain, some of the time. He also pointed out that Jan's BIG HEART was the main thing that kept him going. Jan wanted to entertain and to make people happy.

After the show, which was fun, and had everyone dancing and singing in the aisles, we popped backstage for another quick chat and to say our "goodbyes".

I remember Jan sitting in the same dressing room, where we had seen him earlier. He was again without a shirt, sweating, slouched in a chair, completely exhausted, with his eyes closed and head back. He looked so content.

We didn't want to disturb him, so we whispered to Gary and Dean to step out of the room with us to say our "goodbyes". We asked them to give our regards to Jan. It would be the last time I'd see Jan and Dean.

And hearing of his death, all I've been able to think about is Jan in that chair: Peaceful and Content.

What a sweetheart he was. God Bless him.

Panayiotis

This was a time before we really knew what two girls for every boy meant. We were more into shining red super stock Dodges. I love Jan and Dean as I still love my best friend Billy and now I can think of them together listening to the music and smiling down on us! I was fortunate because at age 54 I saw Jan and Dean in concert in El Cajon California two weeks ago. I wore blue jeans and my car club jacket and drove my 1964 Ford Galaxy to the concertn and for two hours it was 1965 and I was with Billy again watching Jan and Dean always! Raymond Wood

Dear Jan,

we'll miss you, but the music you shared so unselfishly with millions of fans and friends,
will continue to inspire and delight.

This year marks the 44th year of our friendship. I remember the first day as I remember the last, on the set of the PBS televison special, "At The Drive-In."

None of us are the same as we were 44 years ago, but there you were, on that stool, singing the songs that spoke for a generation.

I remember those early concert dates, picking you and Dean up in my folk's '54 Chevy wagon, as we drove to a teen club, auditorium, or dance hall. Those were fun, fun, fun days, Jan. I'm honored to have been along for the ride.

To me, you'll ALWAYS be that good looking teen idol, with the California sun tanned 'surfer boy' image. To me, you'll always be the talented premed student, who took time out from his studies to give us dozens of incredible hit songs. To me, you'll aways be a mentor, as you were to Brian, showing us that a singer CAN do it all: write, produce, perform.

I'd like to think that you're up there with Carl and DW, already doing some 'three part' harmony and just waitin' for us to join you.

You will be remembered, Jan. Don't think for one minute that you won't. I extend my sympathies and good wishes to Gertie, and your Mom and dad, who stuck by you for so many years.

Your friend and fan,

Fred Vail
