Very sad to hear of Jan's passing. One of my earliest memories of music is all that Jan & Dean stuff I listened to inthe arly 60s. I loved playing all those great songs--"Surf City", "Linda", "Sidewalk Surfin'", "Dead Man's Curve", "New Girl in School", "Drag City" and of course, "Little Old Lady...". Their music and Brian Wilson's will always remind me of those summers of '63-'65, and as Brian progressed musically, so too, I believe would have Jan. Another piece of important Americana. I believe today he is "whole" again in the Lord's heaven--able to walk, move and sing as he did in his youth! My thoughts to his family. He gave us good memories.

It is with great sorrow that we mourn the passing of Jan Berry. Jan & Dean are an American treasure. I think to really get Jan & Dean you had to see one of their shows. Their self-deprecating humor, spontaneity, and interaction with the audience made them very approachable. They personified the California lifestyle. Tall, tan and blonde they actually surfed, drove woodies, dated gorgeous girls, and rode their skateboards on stage. Luckily for us growing up on the East Coast we got to see some of this on shows like Shindig and Hullaballoo, but the ultimate came when Jan & Dean hosted the T.A.M.I. Awards show. This was the first “closed circuit” TV broadcast to be seen in movie theatres. The T.A.M.I. Awards still stands as one of the greatest moments in rock n’ roll. Cool and relaxed the duo moved through impromptu intros on groups as diverse as the Rolling Stones, The Beach Boys, and James Brown (while nailing the theme song themselves while riding skateboards!)

Being in a vocal surf band, Walter and I really related to J & D. Their songs were cool, but since they were not as complicated at the Beach Boys, we could actually sing them. Plus, the tunes themselves set us up for our own stage antics some of which we got directly from the boys themselves.

The impact of Jan & Dean on American culture is still alive today. Whether it’s hearing their music in commercials, on the radio, or by the countless new surf bands worldwide, the hang-loose surf style, first personified by Jan & Dean, is even more prevalent today.

I can only imagine St. Peter’s announcement as Jan approached the Pearly Gates, “Guys hold on to your girls, girls hold on ……………………..”

I feel as if I've lost a member of my own family. I've been a fan for 26 years now. I was 13 when I first saw " Deadmans' Curve " on TV and couldn't get enough of them. I saw them in 1981, 1984, 1998, and 2000. I spoke to Jan several times after concerts and will never forget the look of excitment he gave me when I mentioned the names of the songs off the " Second Wave " CD that I liked the most.I am really at a total loss. " God bless Jan & Dean for ever and all ways "

When I was only 10, In 1970,I brought my frist Jan&Dean album,Drag City in a cut out bin by accident thinking it was car sounds,as I was always very into hot rods and drag racing as long as I can remember. I feel in love with the music and as I got older collected ALL the J&D stuff could get my hands on,watch Jan Berry release and buy his Ode, and A&M solo projects, was proud to have seen them at least 10 times in concert from when they started to tour again after the movie "Dead Mans Curve" aired and even luckier to meet both the dynamic duo back stage and even have A could of response letter written by Dean and TONS of autographed pictures of the guys. I ending up collected every surf group from The Beach Boys of cause to lesser hit groups as Ronny & the daytonas to groups that sound have hit big like the fantastic baggies. Little people know Jan Berry was amoung the first people to write ,produce and sing his own work, very rare in the late fifties of teen idols (with exceptions like Paul Anka who wrote great songs)and one shot studio groups who sang whatever songs and productions the label gave them. Jan was a True pioneer of Rock & Roll and his saddens me the Rock and Roll hall of fall STILL hasnt reconized there true roll in the birth of Rock and Roll

It was fun music and I folled them through out the years seeing them in many different concerts. Jan will be truly missed and the music that he created with Dean certaintly needs to be recognized. For me personally in your example to carry on creatively when the odds seem stacked against me, to all those you helped through difficult times, and to your followers in music. Without your skill and intelligence the world of music would be a lot more sparsely populated. To Gertie and family, my heart felt condolences. Thanks, Jan, from the depths of my being.

One of the dumbest things I ever did was trade my Ride the Wild Surf and Little Old Lady albums to my best friend in 1965 for a madras shirt with the agreement I could borrow them back whenever I wanted. I never saw them again. Jan and Dean were my lead in to the Beach Boys and to playing the guitar and I never tired of their sound. What fun they were! Sunday morning waiting to go to church my wife was watching Dead Man's Curve on TV and then later that day I told her the news. We had a chance to see them in Northern California twice in the late 80's and it was a thrill to meet Jan between shows. I'll never forget those early 60's days with the great California sound (probably because I listen to it all the time 40 years later!) There's never been anything like it. Thanks Jan and thanks Dean.

In the summer of 1998 I met Jan & Dean in person when I openned for them at the Spokane Co Fair. I was asked to come back on stage and sing Barbara Ann during their encore. It was and still is the biggest thrill highlight of my Semi-pro career. Before I went on I was very nervous and I saw a gentleman sitting inside one of the tents and he motioned for me to come over to where he was. When I got to him he introduced himself as Jan and asked if I would get him a coke. I was shocked at how slowly he spoke and couldn't believe that he would be going on stage to sing in a little while. Jan was amazing when he performed and I don't believe people realize the how much work he had to put in to be able to get up there and perform. When I heard that he passed away this weekend I was very saddenned. I would like to thank Jan and Dean for the memories and my prayers are with the Berry family. God Bless

Nothing, I guess that would adequately describe the true genius of Jan Berry!! Think about how many lives you must have affected for all these years by the music you created!!!

Thank you for being such a big part of my life.

For some reason, I got up Saturday morning and watched my copies of Jan & Dean's TV Time Capsule, Vol. 1 and On the Run, then around noon, checked my e-mail and got the news. It has been a depressing weekend here, until I got up this morning and realized, "why should I be depressed?" I think that wherever Jan is now, he is 23 years old, well tanned, on the beach with his surfboard, getting ready to paddle out again as soon as he scribbles out some lyrics to a new song he is working on. I just think heaven needed a great record producer and arranger. My thoughts and prayers go out to Gertie, Dean, and the Berry family and friends. Thanks Jan, for the music that will be with me for the rest of my life.

Deepest sympathies to Jan's family and friends. I didn't hear the news until this morning. It's haunting (a little) because on Friday night I put five discs into the CD player and one of them was Ride the Wild Surf (I wore out my dad's 8 track of this when I was a kid). I haven't listened to it for quite a while (a year?). So, there I was at home, Friday night...blaring the Jan and Dean and singing along at the top of my lungs (seriously) oblivious that Jan had passed. I would say a fitting tribute. The one and only time I got to see J&D was circa '78 when they were opening for the Beach Boys. I was only eight but I knew all the words...thanks for memories Jan.

I haven't listened to there music for years, but I for some reason got out my old tapes and records and began listening to them about a month ago. There music always reminded me of America and how happy I am to be living here. They brought out our dreams of cars and beaches, and the innocence of their era. Modern music will never recapture their style. They were truly unique. We will truly miss Jan....

I was quite shocked as I'm sure many were to hear about Jan's death. He was a miraculous survivor back in 1966 and those that have seen the photo of that corvette after the accident would certainly agree.

I was fortunate to have had the pleasure of meeting Jan in early 1990 in Albuquerque, New Mexico when he was there at a Health South facility for rehab. I along with a few others went to dinner about 3-4 times with Jan during his week there and he a very humble and down to earth person, graciously signing autographs and talking about their glory days in the 1960s. I made him some homemade chocolate chip cookies that he loved. I remember him swaying back and forth with his eyes closed and a big grin on his face as he was eating them. I had his then home address and sent via UPS a batch shortly after he left Albuquerque. I requested that he mail a current autographed photo of he and Dean to friend of mine and graciously followed through.

I'm from the second generation of late 1950s - 60s Jan & Dean fans, being a little kid during their original height of popularity.

I'm certain all that knew him then are quite saddened and my prayers are with his family and loved ones.

Jan, I pray that your spirit is with God in Heaven and that you are whole again and experiencing all the love and joy for eternity.

I don't know what to say. Today I am 32 years old, married with 2 kids. But Jan & Dean were a big part of my childhood. I first met them in 1981 (I was 10) at Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre in Indianapolis. My aunt took me down to the stage to get an autograph. Dean picked me up and put me on stage with them, handed me a microphone and I sang "Baby Talk" right there with Jan and Dean! That was just the beginning. We met up again a few years later back at Beef & Boards. I sang again. This started a 3-year "career" of following Jan & Dean around the Midwest, attending as many shows as possible and helping Jan with merchandise. And I will never forget the soda can fight Dean and I had in the limousine! Jan (and Dean) thank you wonderful memories that can never be replaced. God bless you both.
Love,

I've collected their albums & singles since 1960 & I still listen to their vinyl to this day.Deadman's Curve is still my favorite song & at 58 I'm still playing it when I'm racing my 71 Mustang at the drag strip. I always wanted to have grown up in that era with all the muscle cars and music that went along with then like Drag City and many others. I am very fortunate to have been able to see Jan and Dean perform at The Elkhart Co. Fairgrounds in Goshen Indiana back in the late eighties or early nineties (I can not remember the exact date). It was the best concert I have ever been to. Now, we must not be sad, Jan would not want that. I was listening to the 11 P.M. news on March 28, 2004 when I was stunned and saddened to hear about Jan passing away here in Los Angeles. Just last week, I was shopping at a
Trader Joes when I heard the music of Jan & Dean playing throughout the store. As I shopped, I listened to "Surf City", "New Girl In School" "Linda" (my name) and other great hits. I had a bus I had to catch down the street but I lingered a little longer to hear more of the great songs and hummed along softly to the words as each song played throughout the store. As I listened to these wonderful songs I was taken back in time to those glory days of surf music and Jan & Dean.
I left that store feeling good and still singing some of the lyrics as I ran down the street to catch my bus.
A few nights later, I remembered I needed to buy some milk so I popped into Trader Joes again and heard Jan & Dean's songs playing in this store. I thought, "Wow" this is great and actually lingered in the store after I had made my purchase just to hear more of the songs again.
So now, after hearing about Jan passing away I feel a lot of sadness and know that so many people will miss him. I want to say to Dean, you guys were the greatest and your music had so much impact on a whole generation of young people. I know that you and his family are suffering the deepest sadness of all at this time but just to let you know, that I am so happy that we came to know your music and it was truely the greatest!
Linda

I was very saddened by the news today. I enjoyed seeing Jan & Dean perform at Summerfest in Milwaukee Wisconsin and looked for them every year when the schedule came out. My dad was a big fan and he got me hooked at an early age. I'm 35 years old now, and do enjoy today's music, but "oldies" will never die. I played my Anthology album today as a tribute to him. I played it in the car and me and my kids sang along to all of the "bomps." After all, Jan's music was meant to be played while crusin' around town. He will live on in our hearts. Thanks for the great music!!

I couldn't believe it when I heard the shocking news of the passing of the great Jan Berry. I'am one of the "Second Wave" J&D fans, not really knowing who they were until the film "Deadman's Curve" aired on television...February 8, 1978...but who's keeping track. I've collected as many recordings of their music since then. I was lucky to see them live in Canada's Ontario Place July of 1980, June of 1981, May of 1989, and July of 1990. I met Jan in 1989 and once again in 1990 on which occasion I also met Dean. They were both so down to Earth, and we joked around as well, it was like I knew them for years, that's the way they treated their fans, especially Jan...no offence Dean, Jan was so vibrant and full of life, always happy to be on tour. I was able to obtain Jan's home phone number in 1989 and like the avid fan I was, I called Jan April 3, 1990 to wish him a happy birthday, he was go happy to hear from a fan, even though he couldn't remember me from any other fan, but he was very gracious, almost having a bit of a tearful choke in his voice.
WILLIAM JAN BERRY I salute your dedication, and your courage to go on, when others would have given up.
I will gladly receive any emails from fellow J&D fans.

I too am still in shock.
I became a fan when I was just 12 years old when I first saw Deadmans Curve
on TV back in 1977.
I saw my first Jan & Dean concert in September 1979 at the Old Waldorf in
San Francisco. My Mom took me to the concert.
I then saw them in May 1980 at the Circle Star theater near Palo Alto, CA,
then in June of 1981 at Holiday Star theater in Indiana. I got to meet and
get my picture taken with Dean.
I finally got to meet Jan and shake his hand and speak to him in Tucson
Arizona at a concert at Old Tucson several years ago.
I am very sad today, but feel somehow connected to Jan & Dean.
My prayers go out to Jan and his wife, family and fans.
We have lost a great man.

Through time there have been many great record producers, artists, and musicians, but very few more influential on their peers than Jan Berry.

I extend my sympathy to those closest to Jan Berry on his passing.

What can be said about a pioneer? A man who took music of a generation and turned it into a phenomenon. A man who after tragically lost god given talent arose again to be heard. Jan Berry was the true spirit of the 1960's. Jan was an man that could have quit on April 12, 1966.....he lost his whole world on that day or so we all thought. Maybe he lost a part of what was to be, but what was truly inside him roared out until last Friday. A genius, maybe not in IQ after 1966, but a musical icon that will hopefully last forever. Jan Berry, I thank you for making the most of your life and to make other people happy. Maybe in the 60's you were a little cocky & it took an accident of severe proportions to perhaps humble you a bit, but what you have done to put a smile on faces worldwide with your music, sentiment and detremination speaks volumes.....anyone who can't forgive you for being an enthususiastic and ambitious kid in his 20's then should be ashamed. Jan you are now gone, but your life from day one is a great example of what it takes to be a real man.....You came back from Deadman's Curve and I am so proud to have been a fan of yours.......You were an idol to me and not just in the great music you produced. God bless you. I really pray that your suffering is over and you are again that guy of 25 making hits where ever you are up there. Thanks so much. I hope these words reach your wife Gertie, Jan's family and friends and ofcourse partner Dean. My condolences to one and all. Words can not describe what he menat to me as just a fan. Jan was and is legend.

I have mild cerebral palsy, and am a 21-year special education teacher in the Los Angeles area. I have taken my wife and two daughters (since they were babys) to Jan and Dean concerts for the past 25 years. During those forays, we would meet with Jan (and Dean) after concerts thanks to my friend, Randell Kirsch, who provided us with passes. Jan was always happy to see the four of us, and would readily recognize us and begin to converse and joke around with us. He also had the unique ability, as a very gifted person with a brain injury, to encourage others to "keep on going," even in the face of adversity. We have lost a special friend.

There is'nt too much I can add to all of the above sentiments, but I certaintly echo them all.
Upon seeing "Deadman's Curve" back in the seventies, J&D became one of my biggest musical inspirations. I immediately ran out to the local record store and ordered the Deadman's Curve reissue/greatest hits, only to follow those up with many of their originals from record conventions, as well as collections of some of Jan's material from right after his accident.
There are many music personalities I admire, but Jan's passing affects me on such a personal level/ being such an early influence on my musical tastes
God bless Jan's family, Dean, and all his friends & associates, and of course, Jan himself.
Now it's time for him to catch that eternal wave!

I remember this from Van Stephenson and BlackHawk
Don't cry for me when Im gone
Keep the faith and be strong
Cause through it all Ive been blessed
Ive faced my fears and Ive passed the test
So when you look up in the sky on a sunny day
Imagine me drifting away
Ill be sailing on the ships of heaven
When the tide rolls out for the last time
Youll find me sailing on the ships of heaven
Waiting for the day I come sailing back to you
Remember all the times we had
Some were great and some were sad
But you know that in the end
Our love was stronger then when we began
No unforgiven sins and no regrets
Just the times of our lives
That well never forget

God be with all the family fans and friends,

I was so impressed how Jan set up a studio in his garage and recorded those early tunes with Dean and Arnie. My mom bought me a 2 record set compilation Dean put together (Gotta Take That One Last Ride) soon after I saw the movie, and it's been a favorite of mine ever since. I've never stopped being a Jan & Dean fan, in fact I was just recently enjoying Jan's solo cd (Second Wave) in my car. I spent the whole afternoon listening to Jan & Dean. I first met Jan as a star struck college student in March of 1978. He was on the road in Decatur, Illinois with his Aloha Band. My girlfriend Cheryl and I were interviewing him for a college radio station. We spent time with him the first night, during and after the show. The next afternoon, we met up with him at his hotel room, asking the same old questions everyone asks and listening intently as he talked about his plans for a solo album and upcoming tour. He was unstoppable, determined, entirely focused on his new recordings. When I mentioned my radio station hadn't received his new single Skateboard Surfin' USA - he stopped the interview to call A&M records. A week later we had it. The thing I remember most about that day was that he was tired - but undaunted, eager to catch up, eager to do more. I've thought about those two days often since 1978 - he really showed us the most important thing to remember about life: no matter how hard it is, no matter what the struggle... never, ever give up.

I first discovered Jan & Dean in the summer of 1981. I was 10 years old and on summer vacation when I happened to tune into a re-run of Deadman's Curve on sunday afternoon tv.

I loved the music and as soon as I could I went down to a local record store to see if I could find a record by them. I looked high and low and finally I came across The Deadman's Curve album, the liberty re-issue that came out in 1979 with modern pictures of Jan & Dean on the cover. From then on I was an ardent fan of Jan & Dean and the wonderful music produced by Jan Berry.

They have been with me ever since and Jan made me want to produce records of my own, write songs and sing. I used to spend hours with two reel to reel tape decks over dubbing parts and creating tape delay echo. I even recorded a version of Jenny Lee.

It is difficult to put into words what someone means to you and I know I am falling short. Thanks Jan for all of the joy you have brought into my life. Dean, thank you for helping Jan get back to what he loved, singing and creating music.

Rob Hindman, Kneeland Ca.

I am deeply saddened by the news, and my heartfelt sympathies go to his wife, and family. Now Jan is in heaven with his beloved dog, Lady, a white shepherd. He had a big influence on me when it came to doggies. I have 2 Shepherds of my own now. I knew Jan very well and his family for years. I met Jan in 1970 and eventually moved in with him, and spent many years with Jan while he was recuperating. He was like a big brother to me. I was with him the night of his comeback performance at the Hollywood Paladium in 1973. He wanted me to stand way back in the audience to critique his performance. He wrote a song for me many years ago with a young man, Beau, who I introduced Jan to, a ballad, which I have, the most beautiful melody and lyrics, but it was shelved and called, "How I Loved Her, How I Hurt Her, How I Set Her Free." When I think of Frank Sinatra's "My Way," I feel it is comparable. Jan was like a comet and will forever shine in my memory and that of many others. What a trooper. We grew up together. I will never forget him. He never looked back, always moving ahead. And how he loved Laurel & Hardy. So : - )everyone because that is what Jan would want you to do. His music will live on forever.
