Dear Jan,

Thanks for being an inspiration to me. I will never forget your tenacity, spirit, and drive. I loved your music the minute I first heard it 26 years ago. I hope you, Dennis and Carl have as much fun up there, as you three have given me down here.
Heaven must have a hell of a band . . .

Love always,

Brian L.

As Jan's pain ends our tears begin. With shock and a little dismay the world seems a little colder.Man what we went through to have a cool car and get to the beach.
Time will never fill the void we feel now, lost love, family, frinds, and youth our hearts do remember allways. Love and Mercy, Jj

It was about 1984, and I was watching a UK TV series called the Rock and Roll years, it was looking at the events of 1963. I would've been about 12 years old and heard the unmistakable sound of my Aunt's favourite group the Beach Boys, except that the screen said that the music was Jan and Dean. I was instantly hooked, especially when I discovered that J&D had three years of recordings earlier than the Beach Boys. Twenty years later, I am immensly saddened by the news of Jan's death. I never met him, but I bought all of his music, now I'm a music teacher. Thanks Jan for giving me an interest that led to such an enjoyable carear. I won't ever forget you and your music will last forever!

I was saddened when I heard the news last night. I remember when I heard Jan & Dean the first time. I had started to collect and listen to the Beach Boys and discovered the music of Jan & Dean when I was given an LP by my dad - Their music has been a part of my childhood/adolescence and will always be remembered. My thoughts are with Jan and his family. Thank You Jan :( L&M Michael (Sweden)

I already posted a Thank You on Jans message board,
but again, I'll really cherish the time we spent at Brian's
Redondo Beach 1999 New Year's Eve show, and seeing
Jan going crazy to Brian's music. Also I might mention
a LOT of people where afraid to go out that night (Y2K)
But guess who was there fearless and dancin in his seat!
Our Hero.
Gotta thank Chuck Harter for that one.
He also took what may be the last photo ever of Jan
and Brian that evening.

Also gotta mention again,
I was most impressed to know that the legendary
Keith Moon would use Jan and Dean music as the
soundtrack to most of, if not all of his greatest
hotel trashing. Sure there was ALWAYS Brian's
"Don't Worry Baby" and many Beach Boys tunes in
the mix...but I understand that a single spinning of
"Honalulu Lulu" could cause an immediate propulsion
of the Zenith and Occasional tables into the Swimming Pool
not to mention some very creative "upholstory" jobs to
the couch, and curtains.

MY HEART GOES OUT TO ALL OF THE JAN BERRY FANS FEELING THIS
GREAT LOSS. I COULD GO ON AND ON FOR PAGES OF ALL OF OUR DAYS AND
NIGHTS IN THE STUDIO RECORDING THE GREAT JAN & DEAN HITS, MAKING LIVE
T.V. AND THEATER APPEARANCES, A MOVIE PILOT AND THEN FATE STEPPED IN,
THERE WERE TWO ACCIDENTS THAT SIDELINED THIS TEAM. I SAT FOR MANY HOURS
AND DAYS VISITING JAN AT UCLA HOSPITAL WHENEVER I HAD THE TIME, HE WAS
IN A COMA, THE DOCTORS DIDN'T GIVE MUCH HOPE TO JANS FAMILY AND
FRIENDS, AND THEN MIRACULOUSLY, OR AN ACT OF GOD, JAN ROSE FROM THE
DEPTHS OF DESPAIR AND DEPRESSION, MANY YEARS OF THERAPY AND THE WILL TO
WRITE MUSIC AND PERFORM AGAIN AND WITH THE HELP OF HIS PARTNER DEAN,
HIS FAMILY AND FRIENDS, A WIFE THAT LOOKED AFTER HIM AND SOMEHOW KEPT
HIM ON TRACK, JAN CAME OUT OF THOSE DEPTHS, HE WAS BACK ON STAGE, HE
WAS PERFORMING AGAIN, HE WAS WRITING AND ARRANGING AGAIN, THERE WAS
LIFE THERE AGAIN AND THEN, AS IF GOD NEEDED A SPECIAL PERFORMANCE, HE
TOOK JAN AWAY AND THIS TIME FOR ALL TIME. I KNOW THAT JAN IS AT PEACE
NOW, HE WILL OF COURSE LIVE FOREVER IN ALL OF US AND LIVE ON THE
AIRWAVES FOR ALL OF ETERNITY, WE ALL FEEL THIS GREAT LOSS, WE WILL
ALWAYS REMEMBER THE GOOD TIMES,, SO FOLKS,, "GRAB YOUR BOARD AND GO

Jan Berry was my hero. I first saw him 40 years ago when I was 16. Jan and Dean were in Minneapolis for the "Aquatennial" parade. Jan was on a "sidewalk surfboard" hanging onto a rope being pulled by a convertible with Dean in it. He stopped to pose for a picture. I have been a huge fan ever since, and have seen Jan and Dean in concert many, many times. Jan was always gracious and willing to connect with fans afterwards, signing autographs. Jan and Dean's music has always made me smile, and Jan's courage has been an inspiration. My condolences to his family and especially to Dean. Thank you, Jan, for your humor, creativity, talent, and tenacity. You will be greatly missed.

Hi, All in the Spirit of California Livin'
It was a true privilege and pleasure to be able to join Jan and the Alohas in the early 80's, and play with him and be his friend. I had just moved to California, from Champaign Illinois, and was invited to join a band that had 2 other musicians from Champaign as well, Dave Loe, and Jim Hall, a former wild roommate of mine.
Who'd a thunk it?
When we played around the country and in Hawaii, folks would come up after the shows with tears in their eyes, thanking us all for sharing just how strong the human spirit can be, as shown by Jan's courageous fight to get back on stage and his willing to risk it, at all.
I've got other stories, for other times, but his loves and his energy live on in all of us.

Go out and do something incredible for someone else, today, in Jan's name. He will be right there with you.

The Califonia sun,

Is crying behind the moon,
In Los Angeles tonight.

You would sing a song right now,
With Dean if you werre here,
On the beach in Baha,
And dive away this tear.

Load up the woody,
Gotta take that one last ride,
See you in Surf City Jan,

I first became a fan of Jan & Dean when I saw Deadman's Curve on TV. I was 11 at the time, and lived in Ohio.

I bought the Deadman's Curve hits compilation tape, and played it until it wouldn't play anymore. I saw Jan & Dean in concert 4 times, the latest being 2002. It was poignant to see Jan on stage performing, no longer able to move around the stage, but still enjoying making music with his partner Dean.

I'm now 36, but I still enjoy the music of Summer that Jan created. I have the Deadman's curve/Popsicle double CD in my car now.

My condolences to Jan's family, and to his partner, Dean.

God Bless Jan & Dean, always and forever!

IT was spring 1965... I'd been staying at my grandparents' cottage in the country. I'd decided to tidy up the vegetable garden and had the portable radio on one of the pirate stations, Caroline, I think it was... as I was digging away, pulling up weeds and humming along to the various records my ears were suddenly hit by this incredible sound... it sounded like my favourite group, The Beach Boys, only it was much better... it was such a great song, it made you feel real happy and good inside... 'two girls for every boy....' What a place that must be, I thought to myself as I worked away... long after it had finished that song was still buzzing round my head... and now 39 years later as I read about Jan's death it's there again.... and like The Beach Boys' music it'll live forever... thank you Jan, you certainly left your mark on this planet...

Paris, France
Just caught the news of Jan's passing this afternoon from an e-mail from my father, the one responsible for my earliest musical education...
I will never forget Jan's music and those great album covers of the 1960's!
As an only child, I spent countless hours in my room, spinning those great 33's and imagining life in California (I'm originally from Philadelphia).
Neither will I forget my first concert, which was seeing Jan and Dean with my parents when I was a just a kid in the mid-1970's.
Thank you Jan, thank you for sticking around long enough to share your talent with me!
I'll make sure that my son, now 3, has the same opportunity that I once had...only this time around, you'll be on CD!
And wherever you are now, I am so sure that there is "two girls for everyone!!!"
LONG LIVE JAN AND DEAN!

It's hard to come to terms with yet another 'legend' passing on at such an early age. Everyone knows the story of his suffering due to his accident, I just hope people also realise his contribution (along with Dean) to a form of music previously un-heard, but indelibly ingrained on our lives (mine/ours, that'a fact). Maker of great innovative records, great producer, great guy, under an extreme handicap, you will be sadly missed around here that's for sure.

I am deeply saddened to hear of Jan's passing. I was incredibly honored to have recorded a track on the tribute CD "The Friends of Jan and Dean" and then to have met Jan and talked with him in 2001 at Silver Springs Florida after a J&D concert. He was so gracious, so friendly, and so kind. I treasure dearly the picture he took with me. His music was such a big part of my life; he was brilliant in the studio, and I think it is a travesty that Jan and Dean have been overlooked by the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Jan should have been able to experience it in his lifetime. Perhaps the Hall can finally make up for this horrible slight. But the amazing thing about Jan, more amazing than his talents in the studio, was his being a survivor, a fighter. Not the easiest man to deal with at times, perhaps, but he did it. And we all love and admire him all the more. Jan is a hero. Plain and simple. My prayers are with his family and with Dean. Thank you Jan, for all the joy you brought this fan over the years. You came back from Deadman's Curve, and now you have taken that one last ride...finally at peace. God bless you! You are missed and loved!

My sincere condolences to Jan's family and friends. I met Jan on several occasions, and had some wonderful discussions with he and Dean after concerts in the '70's and 80's. Jan was always accomodating and happy to sign autographs, as difficult as it was for him-
he especially like to sign for the pretty girls, my (now) wife included! It was such a joy to see how he got into and moved with the songs onstage- ever the entertainer, Dean ever by his side, a loyal and equally talented partner in his own right. There is such joy and fun in their music, and it is fitting that a man with such an obvious devilish and fun sense of humor be forever remembered through such great songs.

Three weeks ago I was in L.A., involved in a recording session at Cello studios, formerly known as Western Recorders, where Brian Wilson recorded Pet Sounds. While there, Surf City was playing on a radio in the background and it occurred to me how great it still sounded even today, and wondered if the new music we were recording that day would ever capture that kind of feeling.

God welcome you home Jan, God bless your family and Dean, and help them at this very difficult time. Thank you for your courage,
your spirit and your talent, and for so many happy times with your music. My 7, 10 and 12 year old kids know all of your music, and so I'm sure will their kids some day.

We will miss you, but always remember you. We love you Jan,

David Savage

I never knew Jan Berry personally, but I have loved his (and Dean's) music for many years. Surf City is a fantastic song, and I watched the movie some years ago. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the tour dates of the Surf City Allstars including some gigs with Jan. Now I never will get the experience... My thoughts go to Jan Berry's family - from way over in little Denmark.

First of all, my sympathies to Jan's family and many friends. It's hard to lose a friend and even though I did not know Jan personally, he was a friend. Ever since I was a teenager I felt the energy in the music of Jan & Dean. I was singing Little Old Lady when my first child was born. Many thanks for memories and especially the music.

Jan was a huge influence in my life. We recently played a show together in Texas for PBS called "At The Drive In" and I got a chance to spend some time talking with Jan. He was one of the greats of our time, and along with The Beach Boys, invented a form of music that is now a huge part of Americana. I loved Jan, and I will miss him greatly. Jan & Dean did some great music -- "Bucket T" is on of my all time favorites. His music lives on, though, and we can still smile when they play "Popsicle" on the radio.

The first time I saw Jan & Dean was at a Dance in Pismo Beach, Ca where my Surf Band The Impacts were playing. I remember they drove up in matching White Corvettes, I thought 'How Cool' ! I later met Jan at a party in Hollywood in the late 70s and I was saddened by how the car wreck had affected him. Later in the 90s I was honored to have Dean Torrence sing with me on my "Return To MU" album, and Dean also sang at a show with me in 2000 on Kauai. I always marveled at their harmony and Jans catchy songwriting, he was truly one of the innovators and pioneers of Surf Vocals ! He will be missed by many.
